Giacomo Pellegrino – Lost In Berlin EP

Lost and found

No idea whether it makes all too much sense to dive into speculations about the title of this EP and how it relates to what we get to hear. Still a nice way in though. Like – if you got lost in Berlin, what kind of experiences would lead to what we get to hear on this EP?

Maybe, if you look at Berlin for what it is, beyond Techno, beyond music, a place where the world creates its own unique mix, where folks create new versions and mixes of everything from music to coffee to fashion to bread. In other words – you can end up just anywhere. Still – I wouldn’t necessarily have expected Giacomo to get lost in Berlin and stumble over a stash of Garage, but that’s what apparently happened.

What he didn’t lose in Berlin is the heavy dose of smoothness that is always a part of his mix. These four Dubs may be more driving and House-infused than usual, but it’s still as rich, purposeful and well-crafted as we would expect.

The swirling voices, the echoey transmissions and swishes circling around Giacomo’s straight and precise beats – totally appeals to me, tickles me somewhere non-Berlin. Long lost and buried tracks by Tony Thomas and Lee Burridge’s “Lost And Found” pop up in my mind, Marshall Jefferson’s “Mushrooms”, Johnny Fiasco, Karizma, yes that’s all clearly on the House side of things, but it gives you an idea where Giacomo so happily got lost in Berlin. Or was it Chicago? London? All good for me.

Oh, and Detroit, not to be forgotten, with none other than Delano Smith popping in for a remix that condenses, reduces, accelerates and straightens out “Dub 007” in very convincing fashion. I feel compelled to say that they don’t do House like that anymore, no-nonsense, no twirls and pirouettes, no momentous breaks or crazy buildups. Thank you.

Still, no idea what Giacomo found when he got lost in Berlin. But it works real well.
